Fire Erupts at Falls Church Gas Station

Part of Arlington Boulevard closed after blaze

FALLS CHURCH, Va. -- A fire at a gas station in Falls Church, Va., Friday morning forced the closure of the westbound lanes of Arlington Boulevard.

Fairfax County Fire Department spokesman Lt. Raul Castillo said the fire broke out around 11:30 a.m. at a Shell station at the corner of Arlington Boulevard and Annandale Road.

Castillo added that employees at the gas station had been working on a car at the time the fire broke out and that a pile of oily rags on the floor of the vehicle caught fire.  Fire officials don't know what caused those rags to ignite.

Workers tried to put out the fire with a hose, but were unsuccessful.  The fire spread throughout the building before firefighters were able to extinguish it.

Investigators are still determining the cause of the fire.
