GW Student Wins First Lady Contest

Winner to share stage with Michelle Obama

The thrill of college graduation was just taken up a notch for a senior at George Washington University.

Zoe Petkans found out Friday that she will be sharing a stage with first lady Michelle Obama during the 2010 spring commencement.

The international affairs major will address a crowd of 25,000 other graduates on the National Mall. A speech by Mrs. Obama will follow.

Petkans didn’t win the coveted spot because she had the best grades. She beat out seven other hopefuls through the spoken word alone.

During a competition on campus Friday, eight student took turns giving it their all for a group of GW panelists. The speeches were judged in part for the content, delivery and audience appeal.

George Washington’s graduation is set to take place May 16.
