Friendship Heights Metro Station Reopens After Fire

The Friendship Heights Metro station is open following a fire on a train during the morning rush. The station was closed for about 30 minutes during the height of the Friday morning commute. There were no reports of injuries from the fire itself, but a D.C. Fire and E.M.S. spokesman says two people were taken to a hospital, one complaining of asthma symptoms, the other of chest pain.

Meanwhile, Metro officials are investigating an incident earlier this week when an escalator at the Gallery Place station malfunctioned, suddenly going backward and sending two people to the hospital with scrapes and bruises.

The transit agency is bracing for record ridership during the inauguration next month, and General Manager John Catoe has said Metro needs more than $11 billion over the next 10 years for capital needs.
