Friday's freezing rain will give way to light rain in the afternoon, but more severe weather could be on the way.
There is a potential for some heavy downpours Saturday afternoon around much of the region. Storm Team4 meteorologist Tom Kierein said there's also a slight risk of severe thunderstorms for areas south and east of Washington, including St. Mary's County, the northern neck of Virginia and the lower Eastern Shore.
Some storms will potentially produce damaging winds early to mid-afternoon Saturday. A flood watch has been issued for the D.C. area through Saturday evening.
Drivers in the D.C. area tackled icy conditions as they hit the road Friday morning.
Authorities said ice on the roads in some parts of Loudoun County caused a multi-vehicle accident on Route 50 around 5:30 a.m. Route 50 at Carters Farm Lane was closed in both directions as the Loudoun County Sheriff's Office completed its investigation. There's no word on any injuries.
Meanwhile, at least one person was injured in an accident on Airpark Road and Woodfield Road in Gaithersburg, Md. It's not clear whether the icy road conditions were a factor in the crash.
Any ice should melt before noon Friday as light rain will fall occasionally into the afternoon.
Montgomery County, Fairfax County and Loudoun County schools were among several school districts that chose to operate on a 2-hour delay.
Loudoun Co. Schools modified some of their bus stops Friday morning due to the forecast.
