Freezing rain is causing a light accumulation of ice on elevated surfaces like tree limbs, power lines, and shrubbery. There are also icy spots on sidewalks and some roadways that are untreated. Any ice will be melting by noontime, and rain will end by sunset Monday.
A winter weather advisory is in effect across the area until noon Monday, including in the District of Columbia and the counties of Prince George's; Anne Arundel; Charles; St. Mary's; and Calvert in Maryland, as well as the counties of Orange, Culpeper, Prince William (as well as Manassas), Fairfax, Arlington (as well as Falls Church and Alexandria), Stafford, Spotsylvania, King George, and Southern Fauquier in Virginia. A winter weather advisory for areas west of the Beltway in Virginia, including Frederick County, extends from 3 a.m. to noon.
The weather will be turning much warmer Tuesday into Wednesday, followed by another shot of cold air at the end of the week, into the weekend.
School districts - including the District of Columbia - announced late openings. And several major employers allowed employees to come in late.
The federal government will open at noon, as will District government offices. Fairfax and Arlington also allowed government workers to take unscheduled leave.
