Freezing Rain Advisory North and West of DC Tuesday Night

Areas north and west of D.C. will be under a freezing rain advisory Tuesday night. Expect ice accumulation on untreated surfaces, and roads and walkways will be slippery, the National Weather Service (NWS) said.

Less than 0.1" of ice accumulation is expected, but drivers should watch out for slick spots. The freezing rain is expected to begin after 6 p.m. and then move east.

Northwest Montgomery, Carroll, Frederick and Washington counties in Maryland, and Loudoun, northern Fauquier, Clarke, Frederick, Rockingham and Shenandoah counties in Virginia are among the areas included in the advisory. Several counties in West Virginia are also under the advisory, including Berkeley, Jefferson and Morgan.

The advisory will be in effect from 6 p.m. to 1 a.m.

As of 11 p.m. Tuesday, the threat of freezing rain had diminished, News4 Meteorologist Tom Kierein said.

The freezing rain will gradually change to rain between 10 p.m. and 1 a.m., initially east of the Blue Ridge Mountains and along the Appalachians, and staying longest in the Shenandoah Valley, the NWS said.

Temperatures in the areas under the advisory will be in the upper 20s and lower 30s.

A freezing rain advisory means that periods of freezing rain or freezing drizzle could make travel difficult, the NWS said. Be prepared for slippery roads. Drivers should slow down and be careful.
