Frederick Teacher Wins “Oscar of Teaching”

Frederick teacher Maggie Hawk has won the prestigious Milken Educator Award for Maryland.

Milken Family Foundation officials surprised the first grade teacher during an assembly at Yellow Springs Elementary School. Hawk was in tears as the audience erupted in applause.

Called the "Oscar of Teaching," the Milken Education Award is given each year to an outstanding elementary or secondary school teacher, principal or specialist who is "furthering excellence in education," according to the Milken Family Foundation. The award comes with an unrestricted $25,000 financial prize.

"Mrs. Hawk builds a foundation for learning at Yellow Springs Elementary," said Dr. Jack R. Smith, the Maryland Deputy State Superintendent for Teaching & Learning. "From that foundation, the students can do anything they put their minds to," he said.

The Milken Educator Award was launched in 1987, and Maryland joined the program in 1993.
