Frederick High School Students Return After Double Shooting; One Victim Critical

Two days after a double shooting at Frederick High School, students attempted to go back to their daily routine Friday.

Wednesday night, two students from another school were shot outside Frederick High's gymnasium along Carroll Parkway, as a junior varsity basketball game against rival Thomas Johnson High School was being played inside.

The school district reports more than 90 percent of the school's students were in attendance Friday; many wore T-shirts donning a special message: #FHSstrong with school colors, black and gold.

Police believe the two teenage victims, who did not attend Frederick High School, were targeted, though no arrest has been made. Police say the shooting may have been gang-related.

"I was on the floor. All I remember was, 'Boom, boom!' A security guard running in, 'There's shooting!' Then everybody started running," Frederick High School student and basketball player Chris Sanbula said. "We wanted to prove [the shooting] didn't affect our game-playing."

The junior varsity boy's basketball team had another game Friday, where coach David Blumenthal told News4 how he bravely stepped in to help during the shooting.

"I was protecting my kids first, the fans second, making sure everyone was safe," Blumenthal said.

Investigators are looking into reports from students who said they saw four to five males, dressed in big coats and with their hands in their pockets, walk into the gym during the game and leave shortly before the gunfire rang out.

Frederick High School, on the city's west side, has about 1,300 students.
