Frederick Crime Stays Low Despite Population Growth

Crime continues trending downward as population grows

Over the past ten years the City of Frederick's population has grown by sixty percent, but the crime rate is at a 20-year low.

The Frederick Police Department reports a 3.1 percent decrease from last year for all Part 1 major crimes.

From last year, the department reports a decrease in robbery by 40.7 percent; aggravated assault by 29.2 percent; and decline in burglary and stolen auto both by 10.3 percent.

The Part 1 crime total for 2011 is the second lowest total in the past twenty years for the City of Frederick.

Two exceptions to the downward trend are crimes of rape, up by 18.8 percent from 2010, and theft, up by 8.1 percent.

Police remind residents in the city not to leave valuables in their vehicles, to lock and secure their vehicles, garages and bicycles, and to make sure there is adequate lighting near their homes.

Chief Kim C. Dine commended the work of the men and women on the force.
