Former Va. Finance Secretary Gets 10 Years for Fraud

A former Virginia Cabinet official has been sentenced to 10 years in prison for wire fraud.

John W. Forbes II served as Virginia's finance secretary for less than a year under former Gov. Jim Gilmore. Today the 54-year old Forbes was in U.S. District Court where he was lectured by Judge Henry Hudson for abusing his position of trust.

In August Forbes pleaded guilty to defrauding the Virginia Tobacco Indemnification and Community Revitalization Commission. Forbes served on the commission's board and secured a $5 million grant for an adult literacy program that he created. He admitted to using about $4 million for his own expenses.

Forbes apologized for his actions during the court proceedings.
