Former Mason Star Helping Child Porn Defendant

Butler sends letter to judge

Lamar Butler helped lead George Mason's incredible run in the 2006 NCAA tourney. Now he's trying to help a friend avoid a long sentence for possessing child pornography.

Thomas "Randy" White admitted in December to receiving more than 600 images of child porn, according to the Examiner. Many of those photos were of young boys. White, according to the Examiner, coached AAU basketball for kids ages 12 to 17.

What is Butler's connection to the case? White coached Butler in an AAU league, the paper reported.

Butler wrote in a letter to Judge Claude Hilton that he did not want to go home to Oxon Hill in the summer of 2004 because many of his friends had been killed in random violence, so White let Butler spend that time living in White’s basement.

Butler was one of more than a dozen people who wrote letters supporting White, the Examiner reported.

“The man that stands before you has made mistakes,” Butler wrote the judge, “but I am willing to stake my name on the fact that the good outweigh the bad.”

The judge in the case is expected to sentence White on Friday.
