In the Food & Friends kitchen, volunteers prepared food for the home-bound this holiday.

Garlic and spice fill the air, and Ellen Fingerman wrapped turkeys in tinfoil, just like she has for the past eight years.

"We started at about 5 o'clock, and we'll keep going until all the birds have been pleasantly gift-wrapped," she says.

Those Thanksgiving birds were headed for people who are seriously ill, often with HIV/AIDS or cancer.

"Holidays are very tough for people who are ill, and the recession has had an impact on a lot of our clients," said Food & Friends Director Craig Sniderman.

He said they'd deliver 3,500 meals by the afternoon.

"Turkey, trimming, stuffing, beans rolls pies -- the works. It's about 4.5 tons of holiday feast," he said.

Volunteers are welcome all year round.
