First Texting, Now Smoking on Md. Drivers' Radar

Bill would prohibit smoking while kids are in car

ANNAPOLIS, Md. -- Earlier this year, texting was the target of Maryland lawmakers. Now, smoking could get the boot from cars.

A Maryland lawmaker hopes to pass a bill that would prohibit people from smoking while driving young children around.

Montgomery County Senator Mike Lenett is sponsoring a measure that would fine people who smoke in the car while driving children under the age of 8. Drivers would also be fined if they allow another passenger to smoke in the car while in the presence of children under the age of 8. Lenett's bill sets a $50 fine for violations.

Seven senators have agreed to co-sponsor the legislation.

A legislative panel will hear testimony on the measure Tuesday afternoon. A Senate committee killed similar legislation in 2007.
