DC's First 2011 Human Case of West Nile Virus Confirmed

Six human cases were confirmed last year

The D.C. Department of Health confirmed its first human case of West Nile virus this year.

The West Nile virus primarily affects birds, but mosquitoes are capable of passing the virus to humans.

Last year, the DOH identified six human cases of West Nile.

The virus generally causes no symptoms, but on occasion, flu-like symptoms such as fever, muscle aches, a rash and swollen lymph nodes can occur. Senior citizens and those with suppressed immune systems are particularly vulnerable to infection.

Residents are advised to take steps to reduce the number of mosquitoes in their area by eliminating standing water from roofs, gutters and low spots, as well as properly disposing of cans, bottles and open containers.
