Firefighter Injured, Six Escape Burning House in College Park

An off-campus house rented by University of Maryland students caught fire early Saturday morning.

Mark Brady, chief spokesman for the Prince George’s Fire Department, said one firefighter was injured battling the fire in the 7400 block of Dartmouth Avenue. The two-story home suffered significant damage.

Brady said working smoke alarms alerted the six students inside the home, and they were able to escape without injury.

A firefighter suffered minor burn injuries to both wrists and was taken to the burn unit at Med Star Washington Hospital Center.

Investigators are working to search for the cause of the fire. Damage estimates are expected to reach $100,000.

The County Citizen Services Unit and the American Red Cross are assisting the students with temporary shelter.
