Fire in Union Station Causes Heavy Smoke

Red line service affected

D.C. Fire and EMS worked to put out a fire at Union Station on Friday morning.

Metro said the fire started on the tracks, caused by a sparking third rail around 8:45 a.m.  Firefighters were able to extinguish the blaze shortly after, but heavy smoke filled the station.

Remaining smoke in the tunnels is causing Metro trains to single track between New York Avenue and Judiciary Square.  Trains are bypassing Union Station.  In addition, Massachusetts Avenue near the station was closed for the fire investigation.

Police reopened streets at 10:30 a.m.

Metro tweeted out at 10:33 a.m. that trains were moving again in both directions, but delays continue.

Amtrak train traffic was not affected, a spokesperson said.
