Fire Officials: SUV Runs Over Pedestrian on Sidewalk

There was no crosswalk involved in a serious vehicle vs. pedestrian collision in Prince George's County, Md., on Monday afternoon; only a man who had apparently been standing in the wrong place at the wrong time on a sidewalk, right outside a pharmacy.

The crash left the victim with injuries fire officials described as "life-threatening." It happened around 1:15 p.m. outside a CVS Pharmacy at the Eastover Shopping Center in Oxon Hill, according to authorities. Witnesses say an SUV had been driving erratically in the parking lot right before it jumped a sidewalk curb and ran over a man standing there. It ended up crashing into a steel beam inside the building, according to authorities.

Witnesses who tried to help say they saw a gruesome sight -- the victim bleeding profusely from his leg, which appeared to be severed.

When emergency responders arrived, they evacuated the CVS and several other stores because of the structural damage. The victim, described as being in his 40s, was rushed to the hospital and was in critical condition Monday night, authorities said.

Charges against the SUV driver are pending the outcome of an investigation.
