Fire Alarm Box Dedicated to Fallen DC Firefighter

First responders across Washington, D.C., gathered Friday to honor a D.C. firefighter who died last year after battling a high-rise apartment fire.

Lt. Kevin McRae, a 24-year veteran of the department, collapsed after helping to extinguish a two-alarm apartment fire on the corner of 7th and O streets in Northwest Washington. He was taken to a hospital, where he died.

On Friday, the District's fire chief dedicated a fire alarm box in McRae's honor at the scene of the fire.

"Kevin always wanted to be a firefighter," said McRae's brother, Darryl Venison. "For the city to honor Kevin, makes our family proud."

McRae, 44, joined the department in 1989 after serving as a fire cadet in high school. He was the 100th District firefighter to die in the line of duty.

McRae's cousin, firefighter James McRae, died in the line of duty in July 2007.

McRae is survived by his wife and three children.
