Finally! Wilson Bridge to Open Extra Lanes Next Month

Expect more closures in the meantime

ALEXANDRIA, Va. -- Motorists are finally getting the extra lanes promised by a $2.5 billion project on the Woodrow Wilson Bridge.

Next month, crews will re-stripe the lanes and increase capacity from six lanes to 10 lanes.

Two express lanes on each side of the bridge -- which carries I-95 over the Potomac River -- will be separated from three local lanes.

Officials warn motorists to expect lane closures and delays on the Outer Loop on the weekend of Dec. 5.  That's the side that carries Virginia traffic into Maryland. Closures and delays on the other side will occur the following weekend.

While the re-striping will expand capacity on the bridge itself, project construction continues to reduce a nearby portion of the Capital Beltway in Virginia to six lanes until 2013.
