Fight to Preserve 56-Year-Old Church

Pastor wants to replace church in Silver Spring

Preservationists are fighting plans to tear down a 56-year-old church in Montgomery County.

The pastor at First Baptist Church of Silver Spring, Md., says the building on the corner of Fenton Street and Wayne Avenue is outdated and falling apart. He wants to replace it with a new church and a mixed-use apartment project.

Critics say the current church is an important example of 1950s architecture.

The Montgomery County Planning Board will hear the church's plans on May 31.
