Fiat Chrysler said it will begin mailing out recall notices to more than 160,000 Pacifica owners this week.
Certain minivans from the 2017 model year are being recalled because their engines can stall, even while driving down the road. Dealers will begin offering a free software fix next week.
The recall was announced last month, weeks after a Virginia family worked with nonprofit Center for Auto Safety and filed a petition asking the government to seek a recall of the vans.
Allison Cohen, of Leesburg, Virginia, told News4 her car stalled in the middle of the intersection in her neighborhood. Cohen was one of over 50 Pacifica minivan owners who filed a complaint to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
Fiat Chrysler said under rare conditions, the engine control computer can incorrectly determine the operating status and cause the engine to shut off. Fiat Chrysler said it knows of one potentially related crash but no injuries caused by the problem.
Fiat Chrysler sent News4 a statement saying:
The Company is working closely with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration and this recall is being conducted in accordance with regulation. The Company is unaware of any injuries related to this campaign. The Chrysler Pacifica minivan remains the most acclaimed vehicle in its class, having earned more than 70 top safety, quality and design ratings from numerous consumer-advocacy groups and automotive news organizations.
