A popular casual restaurant in Northwest Washington is donating all of its profits this weekend to anti-gun violence efforts after the owner's son was killed by a stray bullet last month.
Tom Marmet, an aspiring social worker, was on his way home from the nonprofit So Others Might Eat when someone started shooting a gun in an alley. The 22-year-old was stopped at a traffic light on 17th Street NE when he was struck. His death remains unsolved.
His father Roger Marmet’s Adams Morgan restaurant Roofers Union is trying to bring about real change in his son’s name.
“Our friends and people who we’ve met through this horrible, tragic experience have all expressed a willingness to do anything to step up, share their connections, give us their resources and their time,” Roger Marmet said.
This weekend, a section of the bar’s wall is filled with the names and faces of all D.C.’s 2018 homicide victims. A table is full of candles representing each one of them.
Friday night’s $10 cover charge also will go to anti-gun violence groups.

“Right now we’re trying to buy gifts for kids that are affected by gun violence so that they have a nice Christmas,” said Laura Morris of Moms Demand Action. “So this will all help tremendously.”
