Fairfax Teacher Placed on Leave for Alleged Racial Insensitivity

Marilyn Bart of George C. Marshall High School was placed on paid leave

Marilyn Bart, a Fairfax County teacher accused of racially insensitive behavior, has been placed on paid leave.

Bart is being investigated for allegedly asking an African-American student to read a poem “blacker.”

Jordan Shumate, a 14-year-old ninth grader at George C. Marshall High School in Falls Church, was reading Langston Hughes’ "Ballad of the Landlord" when Bart asked him to read it "blacker." Bart allegedly said to Jordan, "I thought you were black."

The school system's Office of Equity and Compliance is investigating.

Bart’s attorney told The Washington Post that Bart intends to cooperate with the investigation.
