Fairfax Mayor, Council in Giving Mood

FAIRFAX, Va. -- It may not be the holiday season, but the Fairfax city council and mayor still feel it is better to give than receive.

They voted to cut their pay to help fill $15 million gap in the city's $120 million budget.

The measure was approved Tuesday night in a 4-3 vote.

It is largely symbolic since the six council members receive $4,500 a year and the mayor gets $6,500. All are part-time positions.

Councilman Daniel Drummond said they expect to save about $15,000 by forgoing salaries through the fiscal year that ends June 30.

He said the city is facing its roughest budget ever and the vote demonstrates that it's a "shared sacrifice."
