Fairfax Mayor Announces Cancer Diagnosis

The mayor of the city of Fairfax, Scott Silverthorne, announced Tuesday night that he has been diagnosed with cancer.

Silverthorne said he has squamous cell carcinoma of the neck. He said he hesitated whether to share news of his illness with the public but was inspired by Maryland Gov. Larry Hogan, the Fairfax County Times reported.

“As we've seen with Larry Hogan across the river, and many others, transparency is the better policy,” he told the paper. “And frankly, there are even odds that I will lose my hair as I undergo treatment."

Silverthorne said he believes treatments will not impact his ability to serve as mayor.
