FAIRFAX, Va. -- The Fairfax County Board of Supervisors unanimously approved a budget that reflects the sting of the national economic downturn.
The $3.3 billion spending plan slashes more than 300 county government positions and guts a program that uses a penny of the real estate tax rate toward preserving affordable housing.
County supervisors also did not include a $21 million school funding request to cover a projected influx of thousands of new students next year.
However, the budget restores some funding for public safety programs and preserves many offerings for families, seniors and the poor.
The spending plan keeps taxes steady and also provides a safety net to Fairfax's most vulnerable residents, officials said.
