Investigators with the FBI have returned to the scene where U.S. Park Police officers shot and killed a man in Fairfax County, Virginia, seven months ago.
Fort Hunt Road was shut down Thursday morning as the investigators recreated the scene. They positioned a Jeep Grand Cherokee similar to the one 25-year-old Bijan Ghaisar was driving the night of Friday, Nov. 17 in the same spot where he was shot inside his SUV. Ghaisar, of McLean, was shot after a minor car crash on the George Washington Parkway followed by a police chase.
Investigators used metal detectors, shovels and even machetes as they combed through the woods adjacent to where officers fired shots.
Since the shooting, Ghaisar's family and members of Congress have complained about how long the investigation is taking what they call a lack of transparency.
Ghaisar, an accountant and Virginia Commonwealth University graduate, was unarmed when police shot him in the head three times, according to his family.
On Thursday, the family issued the following statement:
"We hope the events today are an indication of progress in the investigation and a step closer toward justice for a young man whose bright future was needlessly taken.”
