Ex-UMD Student Gets Probation in Shooting Threat

A former University of Maryland student was spared prison time after he admitted to making online threats of a campus shooting rampage.

Alexander Song was sentenced Thursday to three years of supervised probation, a punishment prosecutors say they support.

Song was arrested in March after making an online threat to shoot up the campus, though police said they never found any guns in his possession.

He earlier pleaded guilty to charges of disturbing the peace at a college and misuse of telephone facilities, and he remains banned from the College Park campus.

Meanwhile, Prince George's County prosecutors said their office is drafting a bill that would make it a crime to make generalized threats by phone and email.
