Ex-Teacher in Prince George's County Sentenced for Sex With Student

A former high school teacher and football coach was sentenced on Thursday to 10 years in prison after he was found guilty in September of sexually abusing a student.

Andre Brown, 34, was convicted of having sexually abused a 17-year-old girl in the boys' locker room of High Point High School in Beltsville, Maryland in September 2013.

He abused his power as a teacher, Prince George's County State's Attorney Angela Alsobrooks said.

“We are pleased that Mr. Brown was given this sentence because he was in a position of power and had the responsibility to care for and protect the children in his school,” Alsobrooks said in a statement. "Brown violated that trust and now not only is his life forever changed, but so are the lives of the victim and her family, as well as his own children and family.”

Brown admitted involvement with the victim but claimed in a videotaped police interview played in court that the encounter was consensual.

"Even if the act was consensual, he's sort of a guardian with the victim," a Prince George's County Police Department representative previously said. "Any sexual contact is entirely inappropriate."

Once Brown is released, he will have to register for life as a sex offender.
