Employees: Masked Man Lit Liquid, Started Fire After Failed Robbery Attempt

Employees at a northeast Washington, D.C., gas station said a masked man, who tried to rob the place, squirted a liquid inside the store and lit it on fire early Saturday morning.

Fire crews were called to 1900 block of Rhode Island Avenue Northeast and found the office and store portion of a gas station on fire. There were no injuries.

Employees of the station said a masked man demanded money from the cashier. They said when he refused, the would-be robber squirted a liquid through the cash slot and lit it.

The clerk ran and wasn't injured. The masked man ran as well.

The mini mart and the service bays at the station were severely damaged.
