Dulles Metro Plan Hits Snag

Price of underground station too high for county leaders

Could a plan to bring the D.C. Metrorail system to Dulles International Airport be derailed due to a funding fight?

The Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority wants an additional $330 million to build the Metro station underground.

The Leaders of Fairfax and Loundoun counties and VDOT wrote a letter to the MWAA saying that’s too much.

“We cannot and will not fund the additional cost of the tunnel alternative when an alternative, which is much less expensive and can be constructive with less risk and in a shorter period of time, exists as an aerial alignment at the North Garage,” the letter read.

County leaders and VDOT are set to pay for about 20 percent of the project.
