Woman Killed While Walking in Crosswalk in Falls Church

A driver struck and killed a woman in Falls Church, Virginia, and then ran from the crash scene, police say. News4's Darcy Spencer reports. (Published Saturday, Aug. 3, 2019)

A pickup truck driver struck a juvenile and a 60-year-old woman, killing her, then took off running in Falls Church, Virginia, police say.

About 3 p.m., the suspect went off Shreve Road at Hickory Street while the woman and a juvenile were walking in a crosswalk, Fairfax County police said. The truck struck the woman, the child and then a tree, Fairfax County police said.

Betty Ana Bernstein-Zabza, of Falls Church, was taken to the hospital and pronounced dead, police say. The child was treated for minor injuries.

Witnesses said the man then ran into a nearby Veterans of Foreign Wars building and spoke to some people in the parking lot.

One of them was an off-duty officer who got suspicious and called police.

Police say David Allen Francis, 46, of South Riding, was arrested and charged with one felony hit and run. Police say they anticipate more charges.

Francis is being held without bond. Police say he is believed to have been involved in more criminal activity on Saturday.

Drugs and speed are both believed to have been a factor, police say.

Residents in the area say the crash happened at a dangerous curve in the road.

The pickup truck had extensive damage and police later towed it from the scene.
