Police: Relative Assaulted Driver Who Struck Girl

A family member of a little girl struck by an SUV assaulted the elderly driver in St. Mary's County, the sheriff's office says. News4's Chris Gordon reports. (Published Thursday, July 12, 2018)

A woman driving an SUV hit a child near an ice cream truck in southern Maryland and then was assaulted by one of the child's relatives, officials say.

Both the child and the driver have "incapacitating injuries."

Linda Glaser, 72, was going south on Yorktown Road in Lexington Park, Maryland, when she started to pass an ice cream truck that was parked on the opposite side of the road, the St. Mary's County Sheriff's Office said.

A 10-year-old girl ran into the road from behind the ice cream truck and Glaser's SUV hit the girl, police said.

After the crash, authorities say a 22-year-old relative of the girl assaulted Glaser. A spokesperson for the sheriff's office said the relative will be charged.

Medics took the girl to a local trauma center and Glaser to a hospital.

News4 spoke with a man on Thursday who said he witnessed the crash and ran to help the girl.

"I went on the other side of the vehicle and asked her could she move her legs. One of her legs was trapped under the car. She managed to move her leg and I pulled her out," the neighbor said. He did not want to be identified.

He said the driver got out of her vehicle afterward and went around the back to see what she had hit.

Authorities are investigating the assault and the crash. They are asking anyone who witnessed the crash to call 301-475-4200, extension *2337. Anyone with information on the assault is asked to call 301-475-4200, extension *8075.
