More than fifty people have no home to go to after a two-alarm fire tore through a Maryland apartment building early Saturday morning.
The fire broke out at the Potomac Oaks Condos on Quince Orchard Boulevard in Gaithersburg just before 5 a.m. As some firefighters worked on the blaze, others worked on getting people out of the building safely.
Dozens of residents were evacuated or rescued and relocated to a school across the street, Montgomery County Fire and Rescue spokesperson Pete Piringer said. He said one Montgomery County police officer was treated for smoke inhalation.
"That could've been us, but we're actually safe now. And it makes you appreciate stuff and it makes you appreciate the time you spend with people," one man said.
The Red Cross is helping a total of 39 adults and 22 children who were displaced.
Fire officials said the fire started in the attic area and was likely accidental.
