Dominion Tries Another Restart of Surry Reactor

Dominion Virginia Power is making another attempt to restart a nuclear reactor.

Unit 2 at the Surry power station has been out of service since it was hit by a tornado April 16. It’s now operating at 70 percent of its capacity.

This is the second attempt to start the reactor in recent weeks. Dominion tried earlier this month but then shut it down last Monday afternoon after an apparent problem was detected in one of the unit's cooling ducts, the Richmond Times-Dispatch reports.

The other reactor, Unit 1, was restarted shortly after the tornado hit. It’s been operating at full power ever since.

The plant is located in Surry County along the James River.
