Surplus of Dockless Bikes for Sale in Virginia After Company Had to Leave DC

Two dockless bikeshare businesses left D.C. in July, citing city regulations, but people can purchase one company's brand new yellow bikes in Virginia at a deep discount.

Velocity Bicycle Cooperative will be selling 170 of Ofo's bikes at its warehouse on Mount Vernon Avenue in Alexandria, the bike shop said on Facebook.

Interested cyclists can buy the bikes for $100 each from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday.

The bike shop reached out to companies that were leaving Washington, D.C., due to city regulations and asked for their surplus instead of the bikes being dumped in a landfill, Velocity co-founder Christian Myers said.

Ofo Dockless Bikeshare donated the bikes and removed the locking mechanisms, Myers said.

“These bikes forget their previous life as a bikeshare bike,” Myers said.

The Chinese bike company donated their remaining bike surplus to other community organizations in cities like Atlanta and Seattle where the company stopped service. The dockless bikes had been littered across the D.C. area in strange places.

“There’s been a huge response to the event with a ton of people calling,” Myers said.
