District Gives Unemployed Reason to Cheer

Extension of benefits takes effect immediately

DC's jobless are getting a reprieve.  On Friday, the District of Columbia Council extended unemployment benefits for thousands of city residents.

Mayor Adrian Fenty said the 20-week extension, which will take effect immediately, will help alleviate the burden felt by many households and also provide job training.

The benefits of about 5,000 people would have expired if the legislation not passed, according to the D.C. Department of Employment Services.  Unemployment benefits typically last 26 weeks.
