Diesel Spills Into Potomac River Along Southwest Waterfront

Barge split, spilled fuel

A barge split apart and spilled diesel fuel into the Potomac River Tuesday.

The U.S. Coast Guard was notified about 12:45 p.m. that a floating platform at a fish market near the southwest D.C. waterfront broke and leaked about 40-50 gallons from its 500-gallon fuel tank.

The fire department contained the spill, and the Coast Guard will monitor a private environmental contractor’s cleanup.

The platform, where seafood would be sold, was under renovation and no one was on board.
