A Virginia resident found a partially decomposed human foot in their backyard Saturday, police said.

The resident reported possible human remains in the 5900 block of Brunswick Drive in Springfield to Fairfax County Police about noon.

Police saw the foot and canvassed the neighborhood to find out if there’d been any recent suspicious activity.

They got permission to check other yards for remains and found bones in a nearby backyard, but they appear to be from an animal. Police said they do not believe those bones are related to the foot.

The Medical Examiner’s Office confirmed the foot is human and is assisting in the investigation.

The race or gender is not clear.

Police are continuing the search for information and evidence in the area.
