Montgomery County Public Schools says a student improperly downloaded personal information and test scores of more than 1,300 students from a college preparation program.
A statement from the district says the data breach occurred Oct. 3 and affected 1,344 Naviance accounts tied to Wheaton High School in Silver Spring. Naviance is an online program that enables students to prepare for college and careers.
Naviance told MCPS that the student information that was exposed included students' names, dates of birth, highest ACT scores, highest SAT scores, GPAs, addresses and ethnicities.
The information accessed did not include social security numbers, banking information or credit card information, the district said.
The student wrote a program or algorithm that tried various combinations of usernames and passwords to gain access, MCPS's statement says.
Officials say the student — who does not attend Wheaton High School — was tracked down Oct. 7 and awaits both school discipline and possible criminal charges.
