Dad Shot By Police Near Maryland Day Care

Man lunged at officers with ax: police

A father was shot and killed by police near a Glenn Dale, Md., home day care Thursday.  He was angry that he wasn’t allowed to pick up his children, according to police.

The shooting happened at 2:50 p.m. in a large suburban home in the 11000 block of Glenn Ridge Road.

Albert Denton, 38, went to pick up his two young children, but was turned away by the day-care staff. They had instructions from the children’s mother not to release the kids to their father.

Denton left but soon returned with an ax, police said.

When officers arrived at the day care, Denton did not back down. He lunged at officers with the ax, according to police. Three officers shot at him.

He was pronounced dead at the scene.

No children or police were hurt.

The officers -- 11-year veteran Sgt. Thomas Hendershot, 6-year veteran Patrol Officer First Class Henry Colon and 5-year veteran Patrol Officer First Class Haris Johnson -- have been placed on routine administrative leave.
