D.C.-Area Kids Celebrate Bike to School Day

Dozens of preschoolers headed to school on their bikes, trikes and scooters to mark the event

On Wednesday, a lot more children will be on their bikes because it's National Bike to School Day.

At the Takoma Children's School in Northwest D.C., dozens of preschoolers came to school on their bikes, trikes and foot scooters to mark the event.

They weren't alone. For the first time ever, communities, bicycle groups and schools nationwide came together to celebrate student-powered transportation over the fossil fuel alternative and also promote traffic and bike safety.

This was evidenced by the fact that many of the Takoma school youngsters wore their helmets and some even had reflective vests. The gear is necessary "because safety is important," said four-year-old Kayo.

Parent Rachel Lettre, an avid bike commuter herself, helped organize the event at the Takoma school as a way "to find safe routes to school as summer approaches," she said.

Schools throughout the metro D.C. area are participating in today's activities.
