Local Bars, Restaurants Offer Papal-Themed Food & Drink Deals

Local restaurants and bars are gearing up for Pope Francis' visit to Washington with papal-themed specials.

From brews to a "communion" cookie (yes, really), here are a handful of offers to check out while the pope is in town:

Brookland Pint (716 Monroe St. NE)
Across the street from Catholic University's campus, Brookland Pint has 20 religious-themed beers to commemorate the pope's historic visit. They've even renamed their house brew "No Pope 'Til Brookland" for the week, the Washington Business Journal first reported

Buca di Beppo (1825 Connecticut Ave. NW)
Locations of the nationwide chain have a special "Pope's Table" that seats 10 to 18 people. The area is decked out with photos, memorabilia and other papal tributes, and the table has a centerpiece of the current pope encased on a rotating tray.

Del Campo (777 I St. NW)
Chef Victor Albisu created an all-day happy hour menu to offer a reprieve from the traffic starting Tuesday and going through Thursday.

Ella's Wood Fired Pizza (610 9th St. NW)
You can take a selfie with the pope at Ella's Pizza... well, kind of. The restaurant has a cardboard cutout of the pontiff outside its door for all your selfie needs. While you're there, consider the Pope Pizza, which features ricotta cheese and yellow tomatoes -- an inspiration drawn from the white-and-yellow Vatican flag.

Embassy Row Hotel (2015 Massachusetts Ave. NW)
The Embassy Row Hotel in Dupont Circle is throwing a rooftop party Tuesday to celebrate the pope's arrival with a menu honoring his native Argentina. All proceeds from the event, which will serve empanadas, dulce de leche and malbec, will be donated to So Others Might Eat, a local interfaith charity that feeds the homeless. Tickets will be $10 at the door.

GCDC (1730 Pennsylvania Ave. NW)
The grilled cheese bar will be serving a rib-eye steak and provolone cheese, called The Pontiff, with chimichurri sauce served on ciabatta. The sandwich is inspired by Pope Francis' Argentinian background. An Argentinian malbec wine will also be available.

Hay-Adams Hotel (800 16th St. NW)
Two cocktails will be featured for the papal visit at this historic downtown hotel: the Holy Grail, made with lemon, olive oil, Benedictine and gin, and the Castro Novo, made with fresh orange juice, Hennessy VSOP, Amontillado sherry, and Chateaneuf-du-Pape wine.

Posto (1515 14th St. NW)
While some eateries are preparing a menu from Pope Francis' native country and others focus on the Vatican, Posto in Logan Circle has created a special three-course menu of Roman dishes for $29.99 per person. Each course has three options; wine pairings are also available.

Potbelly (Catholic University location only; 655 Michigan Ave. NE)
The Potbelly sandwich shop at the Catholic University of America has been serving a special Papal Shake since late August. For every strawberry Oreo shake sold through Sunday, Potbelly will donate 50 cents to the Catholic University Campus Ministry.

Rumors (1900 M St. NW)
Rumors will donate half the profits from its special Pope Sandwich to St. Maria's Meals program.

Taylor Gourmet (all locations)
All Taylor Gourmet sandwich shops will serve a free "communion" cookie Wednesday when you buy one of their six new fall hoagies. According to the Washington Business Journal, they'll also take "confessions" at the registers from 2 p.m. until 5 p.m.
