DC police officer shoots, wounds robbery suspect

District of Columbia police say an officer has shot and wounded a robbery suspect in southeast Washington.

Police spokesman Araz Alali says the shooting happened around 1:20 Tuesday morning in the 4100 block of South Capitol Street.

He says the man, identified as 31-year-old Paul Smith, faces charges including robbery while armed, felony assault on a police officer and kidnapping.

Police say the officer, who was on duty at the time, interrupted the robbery and ordered Smith to stop. Alali says the officer fired at Smith after Smith aimed his gun at him.

The officer's name was not immediately released.

Smith's condition wasn't immediately known, but police say he was shot several times to the body.
