Solo Rower Pulled From River

A rower was rescued Sunday afternoon by a Coast Guard vessel near the Francis Scott Key Bridge.

A 61-year-old woman in a rowing scull had swamped her boat and was struggling to stay afloat shortly before noon.

A coast guard crew that was conducting a training exercise in the area was able to locate the distressed rower, Jenie Upchurch, near the confluence of the Anacostia and Potomac Rivers.  Upchurch was being assisted by another rower when the coast guard boat arrived.

She was thrown a flotation device on a rope, and was pulled to safety by the crew.

"It's important to remember to never go out alone," Washington-based seaman Kristina Pietrofrere said.  "It's always good to go out with somebody with you, just in case something like this happens."
