D.C. Schools Granted No Child Left Behind Waiver

Schools must still meet improvement goals

The Obama administration granted D.C. schools a waiver for the Bush-era No Child Left Behind program yesterday.

The waiver means Washington public schools will not have to adhere to all aspects of the law.

While the controversial law requires all students be proficient in math and reading by 2014, D.C. students must meet the standards set forth by school administrators.

Their goal is to have 73 percent of their students proficient in reading and 74 percent of their students proficient in math by 2017. The District would also like to improve its four-year graduation rate from 59 percent to 78 percent by 2017.

This is not the first No Child Left Behind waiver Education Secretary Arne Duncan has granted. In fact, he’s granted 33 waivers. Maryland and Virginia schools each received a waiver.
