D.C. Police Seek Hit-And-Run Driver After Fatal Accident

Tan SUV with D.C. license plates sought

D.C. Police are asking the public's help in locating a vehicle that they say ran over a 16-year-old girl on New York Avenue Friday evening.

Investigators say that the girl was attempting to cross New York Avenue at First Street, Northwest shortly after 6 p.m. As she attempted to cross outside the intersection's east crosswalk, police say she was struck by a 2003 Pontiac Bonneville, which had just crossed the intersection of First Street with a solid green signal.

After being hit by the Pontiac, police say the girl fell down in the middle of the road and was run over by a tan SUV with District of Columbia license plates. Unlike the Pontiac, which remained on the scene, the SUV did not stop and continued east on New York Avenue.

The girl, who is only identified as a resident of Northwest D.C., was taken to a local hospital, where she succumbed to her injuries and was pronounced dead Saturday afternoon.

Anyone who knows the whereabouts of the SUV and/or its driver is asked to contact the Metropolitan Police Department's major crash unit at (202) 727-9099.
