A D.C. police officer was shot and wounded Monday night in Southeast, police say.
Officers responded to a report of shots fired at an apartment in the 2200 block of Savannah Terrace SE at about 7 p.m., police said.
As the officers approached the building, a man went out and started firing at them, shooting one officer, D.C. Police Chief Peter Newsham said at a news conference.
Officers fired back and fatally shot the suspect, Newsham said.
The officer was rushed to a hospital with non-life threatening injuries.
Two sources told News4 that the officer's bulletproof vest stopped the shot.
Police declared a barricade situation for fear that there might be a second shooter. Officers found a man suffering from gunshot wounds inside the apartment a short time later, Newsham said. He was in critical condition.

Police have not identified the suspect who fired at the officers or the man found shot inside the apartment.
A woman identifying herself as the sister of the suspect who died and the man in critical condition said they were brothers. She said she believed they got into a fight and the suspect snapped.
"Might have been the medication. He went and picked up his medicine today, so I would like to check ... and see what they prescribed for him," Renee Carter said.
News4 crews at the scene saw a major police presence in the area.
Police shut down 23rd Street SE between Alabama Ave. and Savannah Street SE in both directions.
