D.C. Police are investigating an officer-involved shooting after an officer apparently fired a gun during a traffic stop early Sunday morning.
The Metropolitan Police Department's Internal Affairs Bureau said the shooting happened at about 3:53 a.m. in the 500 block of Alabama Avenue SE.
According to a news release, uniformed police officers were dispatched to the area in Congress Heights after a report of a suspicious vehicle. The officers identified a car that matched the report's description and stopped the car.
"During the interaction an officer discharged their service weapon and the suspect fled the scene in his vehicle," MPD said.
The suspect later walked into a hospital for treatment of injuries that were not life-threatening and was arrested.
The officer who fired the gun has been placed on administrative leave.
Police said the suspect, 48-year-old Donald Willis of Southeast D.C. was charged with assault on a police officer, possession of a large capacity ammunition feeding device and fleeing from a law enforcement officer in a motor vehicle.
