D.C. Officers Honored for Response to Navy Massacre

District of Columbia police officers who responded to the Washington Navy Yard massacre in September have been honored by the department.

Police Chief Cathy Lanier gave awards at a ceremony Thursday night to multiple officers, including one who was shot and wounded in the legs by gunman Aaron Alexis.

Alexis, a former Navy reservist who authorities said suffered from delusions, killed 12 people inside a Navy Yard building where he worked as a contractor before being killed in a shootout with police.

Officers from the D.C. police force and the U.S. Park Police were honored for their roles in the final firefight that killed Alexis. Lanier said at the ceremony that officers had to improvise because there was no place in the massive building to take cover.
